Bull Barlow Got Beat by a Girl
by Hal Swift

Miss Katy from Texas
got a job in the mines.
Now she's an intelligent kid,
so she wisely decided
she'd dress like a man,
to keep her identity hid.

Some ol' boys wondered
jist who this kid was
an' why it was he'd been employed.
An' two of the fellas,
whose gang she was on,
begin to git really annoyed.

Now one of the roughnecks,
whose name was Bull Barlow,
decided the kid had t'go.
He figgered he'd work it
so the kid'd git fired,
for reasons the kid wouldn't know.

He managed to mess up
young Kate's daily work,
so nobody knowed that he done it.
But the kid knowed he did,
an' decided the game
would be better if she was t'run it.

So she set 'im up good,
made 'im look like a fool,
an' he was so mad he was sick.
So he called the kid out,
shoved 'er down in the dirt,
an' give 'er a heckuva kick.

But she got to 'er feet
while Bull was a braggin',
an' give 'im a brain-joggin' rap.
But she hit 'im so hard
that it jogged her up, too.
And 'er hair fell from under her cap

The boys all fell silent,
then started t'laugh.
Bull's brain was a startin' t'whirl.
Never mind what they said,
what they'd keep in their head,
was Bull Barlow got beat by a girl.
